My Single Mom Life: The kids watched the Ten Commandments last night.

« And now for something completely different. | Main | What is your memory »

The kids watched the Ten Commandments last night.

I watched it with them, it's been many years since I watched it in all it campy goodness.
They were utterly fascinated with this story and sat in bewilderment and asked me questions like, " People believe this stuff?"
To which I replied, "yes they do."
Mark being the most curious said things like but nothing like this stuff has ever happened ever ever again so how can people still believe it?
These are stories in a book mom how can people be so stupid.
I said that people have faith that these stories are true even though there is no evidence to back them up. They simply trust with everything they have that these things happened and follow every word.
Mark says to me, "Mom, Moses was on that mountain for 40 days and then he comes down with these 2 tablets with writing on them. How do we know he didn't carve those words himself?"
I said, "Mark, that is more than likely what happened but people would like to think that God took his time over a period of 40 days to write those words in stone yet they also believe that he created earth and all it's inhabitants in 7 days."
Then he said something funny and we laughed and I won't repeat it because it's a mommy son bonding moment to cherish.
The he said, "hey! Didn't Metallica have a song about the Pharaohs' son?"
"Yes, it's called Creeping Death."
The lights in his head fired up again and he started singing loudly, "So let it be written, so let it be done, to kill the first born pharaoh son
I’m creeping death!" with a little James-es-que growl going on.
He got a good giggle and some laughs over the seen with the burning bush and the whole I am speech.
He said "What was that Rufus said mom? you know, in Dogma?"
I said "he said 'We were sent by Him who is called I Am.'"
We laughed some more.
He went around during commercials singing in low baritone like Cam from Ferris Bueller, "let my people go."
Bwahahaha.

Please don't send hate mail.
It was a mommy son bonding moment that I won't soon forget.
What was Sebastian doing? He fell asleep around 9. Right before all the really good and funny stuff happens.

My grandma watched that silly movie every Easter. She made Grandpa watch it too, poor guy. After 50-plus years of marriage, he was whipped. LOL! I love that film, man. I love Rameses. Tell me Yul Brynner was not da man. And that overdramatic score, Charlton Heston's truly terrible acting (and aging) as Moses, the talking burning bush with Cecil B. DeMille's voice....that guy really thought he *was* God, didn't he? Then Heston adopted that same attitude years later.

Ramses was da man! I love bald men. Did you know that? There's something sexy about bald and it all started with Yul and this movie. Yes it did. I was made to watch this thing every single year. I can't stand the movie personally but now that they have seen it, they probably won't ever want to watch it again...lol

I'm right with you and the bald men thing, Kat. I love when Les shaves his head! Now if only I could talk him into getting that tribal tatoo across the back of his thick neck... ooo ya!

That is so priceless! You know you are raising your son right. :-)

Ouchie on the neck tattoo.

I am an atheist and I have never taken my kids to church but we do watch some shows about religion to be educated, not pray. For example, we are all highly interested in tonights ABC 3 hour special on Jesus and Paul. The beginnings of christianity I think they called it.

We can have fun and laugh but we listen and learn. Ya gotta admit though, The Ten Commandments is one of the campiest movies ever.

"Somehow or other an extraordinary idea has arisen that the disbelievers on miracles consider them coldly and fairly, while the believers in miracles accept them only in connection with some dogma. The fact is quite the other way. The believers in miracles accept them (rightly or wrongly) because they have evidence for them. The disbelievers in miracles deny them (rightly or wrongly) because they have a doctrine against them." - Chesterton.

On Lourdes.

So, are you saying that you have proof of the burning talking bush? I'd love to see it please. The "miracles" my son and I were talking about were the bush, the talking, the mist, the water and so on and on and so on. Do you have proof of these? Miracles like Lourdes, come on, give me a break. It's well known that hysteria is 'cure' for a lot of things. There are people who pray and pray and pray and still die or still suffer so a handful of 'lourdes miracles' compared to the crap we were taught in the bible, is bullshit. Where are the big parting of the seas these days? How about fiery tornadoes blocking evil doers paths? Some bleeding statues does not a god make.

Oh, and loving the fake email you ass. Where's your courage of conviction? What's the matter? You don't want to really talk about it? You want to post but not take responsibility for what you say? I'm not a spammer, I just answer each and every post personally.

And another thing Sal, this is the catholic church calling these things miracles. Is that supposed to be good enough for me? Is their word good enough? This is the church that has protected pedophile priest for many many years and lied to their own church members about the child rapes and then lied to law enforcement because they believe that they are above the law! It is only when a massive outcry from it's congregation did they agree to cooperate with the laws and courts.
Am I or anyone for that matter supposed to take the word of known liars and protectors of child rapists as provers of miracles or god???!!!

You're right Kat, you shouldn't have to take anyone's word that something happened or didn't happen, simply because. However, I do believe that religous faith is something that only the individual can truly decide for his/her self. My advice, don't ever accept anything you're not sure of, just because. (unless its your mother)Ha..Ha but you do have to do whats right for you, and in your soul you should know the right answer. And yes I am a Christian; but who am I to judge?
