Don't spam your fellow bloggers.
We all hate spam right? We hate it in our email box, we hate it on our comments, why would any blogger think it's ok to spam their fellow bloggers?
Recently, this has happened to me about 7 times in the last week.
A couple of bloggers are trying to promote their blogs, or some part of their blogs they want out there.
I'm all for promoting yourself, I love a little promotion myself.
But do not, under any circumstance, do it in your fellow bloggers comments.
It's tacky.
One instance was someone promoting a feature of their blog, it was either a daily or weekly thing.
They hit every blog on their blogroll with exactly the same comment about their feature.
It was highly impersonal, had nothing at all to do with the post any of the bloggers had written. We were in essence, spammed.
The very first thing that popped in my head, was to delete their comment.
I did.
Then, I thought about removing them from my blogroll.
I didn't.
I did however, send them an email alerting them of the tackiness of what they had done, and to never do that again on my blog, or they'd find themselves removed from my blogroll and their ip banned from leaving comments.
Just because you are a fellow blogger, does not mean you can spam your fellow bloggers.
If you want to promote your blog or feature, or an article, send a personable email, not a BCC to 100 bloggers, and explain that you are trying to drum up some traffic for your blog or feature, give us the option of looking at it.
Another option is to set up an email subscription service and allow people to opt in.
You can find a great list of suggestions for programs in the comments of Problogger on this post.
Post your opt in on your blog, let people choose to get emails from you about your site, your posts, features and articles you want people to come see.
I am opted in on only one blog, Faster Than The World, because I enjoy the emails, I love finding out about their upcoming polls, articles etc. They don't spam the heck outta me either, it's probably once every two weeks I get a newsletter from them.
So in closing, when leaving a comment, be on topic to the post they have written, relate your own story, be personable.
We like it.
We don't like spam.

I have been asked to fave on Tecnorati, exchange for links, etc. I visit their blog and only if their content is applicable to my blog or I enjoy it I will do what they ask. This need to move up in ranks assumes everyone feels the same.

Colleen,
Word up...LOL
____________
Peter,
That is still considered spam to me. They could have just sent you an email asking for those types of things. Their comment was probably off topic to your post. That makes it spam.

*cough* Ahem, I have a new blog at ohmyspam.us that needs a large readership - please visit!!!!1!!!!!111
Sorry, I couldn't resist. I've gotten those sort of comments as well and they really irk me. First of all they have nothing to do with the post I made and if the reader cannot be bothered to read my entry why should I bother to read their blog? I have a commenter's policy posted on my blog and it's displayed every time someone goes to comment. If they cannot abide by them than tough cookies.
You're a lot nicer than I would have been. I have a commenter's policy listed on the site as well as a disclaimer and copyright. People I choose to list on a blogroll, and not one of the ones I sign up with like the PPP wannabe, are chosen for a reason . Thus, they are held to a higher standard because I expect better behavior than that. If they can't abide by simple netetiqutte then I will happily delete their spamy comment and remove them from my blogroll with a nice email to accompany it to boot.

Joana,
Exactly! I'm not writing this so people can leave off topic promos in my comments, I want genuine feedback. if they can't do that, it's going to be deleted.

I haven't been getting any spam from people on my blogroll, but I am always having to delete spam that gets left on my sponsored posts. I suppose it would irk me that much more if I got spammed by someone I 'knew'.
