I have no idea what it was, but it took all day.
I cleaned the microwave out today.
It took all day.
See, when I'm sick and down for the count, the boys cook for themselves.
I opened the microwave this morning and nearly fell over from the smell.
I sprayed some Fantastick in it, wiped, scrubbed, the gunk didn't budge.
So I filled a bowl with water and lemon juice and nuked it for 10 minutes.
Some stuff came off when I wiped it next, but more stuff was like cemented on the inside.
So more water, more lemon juice, more nuking.
All totaled, it took an hour of nuking at 10 minutes per round to finally get the gunk softened enough to come off the walls and roof of the microwave.
I was contemplating getting my chisel out of my toolbox for awhile there.
But I finally just got the whole thing cleaned out, and then sprayed it with some lemon juice to make sure it smelled fresh and clean.
It seriously smelled like they murdered something in it.
Ick.

And I am sure when you asked them what the hell they killed in the microwave you got blank stares? haha...

It's not just teen boys who leave microwaves a mess. When I was working for the NJ Deprtament of Motor Vehicles, there was a microwave in the break room, and it was really gross. I took it upon myself to clean it, so that I could use it, and tried to get co-workers to help keep up with cleaning it so it would mot get that gross again.
It didn't work. Within a week, it was gross again, so I gave up on it.
Gack.

I usually use a bowl of vinegar, but water and lemon juice sounds so much more pleasing!
