It must be such a difficult way to live.

Did I ever tell you about what my sister does for work?
She is a home care giver for a family with a disabled son.
He has Cerebral Palsy, or MS, I can't recall exactly which one, but Greg is about age 15 now, and is unable to care for himself at all.
He doesn't speak, he has the mentality of a 3-4 year old.

She is an occupational therapist, and helps him keep his legs and such from getting atrophyed.
She does exercises with him, bathes him, does a lot of communication training with him through computers and sign language, and many more things.
Recently, Greg had to have another surgery on his legs, his hips specifically, because of the constant held sitting position he is always in in his wheelchair, and some abnormalities in his leg lentgh from his birth defect.
This is such a hard time on the whole family, he's had so many surgeries, but because of his disability, he has to be in a full body cast in order to heal.

This means instead of wearing the usual adult diapers he normally wears, his mother has to drive from store to store, all over the southern part of the state, to find the correct sized diapers for him.
One store will have one package in the right size, and that's it, so she has to go to many more stores to find more packages.
Jo said that tomorrow, Monday, this is what Greg's mom will be doing most of the day.
She's tried ordering on line, but even suppliers on line don't always have the right sizes in stock, or they get lost or are late shipping.
Greg must have a good supply on hand all the time because he is fed through a tube in his stomach several times a day, and within minutes he needs to be changed.

It's very frustrating for Greg's mom, it takes it's toll on her, and she is such a sweet woman, so kind and caring, always giving to everyone else in her life, even strangers.
I wish she didn't have to struggle so much to take care of Greg and make sure he has everything he needs all the time, I'd love to see her just have one single day where she is like, applauded, for all she does for everyone.
I know she'd never accept a day all to herself, that's how she is, but if anyone deserves a day of honor and appreciation, it's Greg's mom.

Comments

Next time I'm tempted to complain about something in my life, I'll think of Greg's mom.
